Bolton Institute of Higher Education

Now Bolton University

Bolton Institute of Higher Education

New educational institutions with a technical bias proliferated in the 1960’s and 70’s, awarding degrees as well as diplomas, and Bolton Institute of Higher Education is one of these.  The building was completed in 1970, and was designed by Geoffrey H. Brooks, Borough Architect. It makes use of concrete, steel and glass.

During the 1980’s Bolton Institute of Technology (B.I.T.) as it was originally known, became amalgamated with the College of Education, together forming the Institute of Higher Education.  The two facilities of B.I.H.E. on Deane Road are the Faculty of Applied Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering.

Huge press outside B.I.H.E.

In the area where B.I.H.E. now stands there used to be a large number of terraced houses.  Many of these were damaged and destroyed during the First World War when Zeppelin air ships dropped bombs at random on Bolton in 1916. During the night of September 25th, 1916 this area was bombed and fifteen people were killed in Kirk Street.

Today, B.I.H.E. has been transformed into the BOLTON UNIVERSITY. The Tower Block has now been replaced with a State of the Art Design Block made mainly of glass.  The whole Campus is currently undergoing structural changes to fit with the new image of Bolton's University.
