 Cotton yarn was being spun in Horwich in Henry VIII’s reign.

1547

 Henry VIII’s reign

   
   1513    

 Richard Urmston granted land in Horwich by John Barton of Smithills.  This in now known as Ormstons Farm.


1521
   

 Rev. Edward Tempest in charge of Chapel at Horwich.

   
    1547   

 Five shillings paid for a new KURFU (Curfew) rope for the old chapel.

   

    1552   

 A chapel of Ease at Horwich was  proved with ornaments for saying mass.  There were three bells belonging to the poor man of the town.

   

    1565   

 Commissioners for Queen Elizabeth came to Horwich to make sure the old religion restored in the time of Queen Mary had been abandoned.

   1566   

 Rivington Grammar School founded.

   1568   

 Blackrod Grammar School founded.

   
   1588   

 Beacon on Rivington Pike lit to announce coming of Armada 19th July.

   
         1598   

 The constable of Horwich presented a number of persons to the Court Leet of Manchester as tithing men.

   
        1599   

 James Anderton purchased the Manor of Horwich from Nicholas and Elizabeth Mosley.

   1611   

 Manor of Rivington sold to Robert Lever and James Breres.

 Manchester Court Leet Records “Item paid for hue and crye that came from Horwich after the man who made an escape forth of ye stocks for stealing certain lynen cloth 0-0-8d,”

    

    1640   

 Thomas Willoughby married Eleanor Whittle, he was late to become a Puritan Major in the Civil War.  He was the “Old Lords,” the site of his home.

    
    1641   

 James Walton, curate of Horwich signed the National Protestation to maintain the Protestant religion.

    1642   

 The Battle of Westhoughton Common in the Civil War.

    
           1643   

 Horwich men fought for the Parliamentarians at the Battle of Middlewich on the 16th March.

    
    1650   
Parliamentary Survey of the Churches in Lancashire mentions Henry Pendlebury preaching at Horwich.

1660

   Horwich Church register of Books exist from this date.
