Horwich Population 1565.

 

 1801

Formation of a Building Society to build Club Houses now known as Nelson Street, Duncan Street, George Street, etc.

 1811

Horwich population 2374.

 
 1818

Horwich Moor Enclosed.  Common land purchased mainly by local gentry.

 1821

 Horwich population 2873.

  
  1822

Horwich Building Club ceased to exist.  Auction at Black Bull of property held by the Club.

 1824

Chorley New Road proposed and opened in 1829.

 1831

Present Parish Church built to replace Horwich Chapel.

 1831

Horwich Population 3562.

 1832

A new larger Parish School built in this year.

Queen Victoria’s Coronation – Sunday School Scholars marched through Horwich.

 1837

First Horwich Horse Races took place on 22nd August.

Death of Scotsman George Henderson on Winter Hill (9th November)

Horwich Police introduced.

    1841  

Bolton and Preston Railway’s Blackrod Station opened.

Act of Parliament giving authority for Liverpool to build reservoirs at Rivington.

1850

Horwich Flood.  Devastation on the 16th July after torrential rain.

 First Show of Horwich Agricultural Society.

 Horwich Population 3952.

                        1856      

 A new church for Horwich Lee Congregationalists built.

 Horwich Population 3471.  Fall due to shortage of imports caused by American Civil War.

     1862   

 Paper Mills at Horwich started by Leonard Cooke.

     1865   

 Jolly Jackson started the Vale Bleachworks but previous firms had existed in the vicinity.

     1867   

 The Independent Methodist Chapel, Lee Lane, built.

     1871   

 Horwich Population 3671.

     1872   

 Horwich Local Board formed - a fore-runner of the Council.

 1877

The Toll-bar at Fall Birch abolished.

   1879 

Horwich Public Hall opened.

 1881

Horwich Population 3761.

 1881

Horwich Railway Station opened.

 

  1882

New Grammar School at Rivington opened as Rivington and Blackrod Grammar School.


1884

Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway purchased land for new works at Horwich.

 1888

Railway Mechanics Institute opened.

 

1889

20th February First Engine completed at Horwich Works.  It was no. 1008 now at the National Railway Museum, York.

 
1891

Horwich Population 12 850.  Increase due to the arrival of the Locomotive Works.

 1892

January 3rd, Fire in New Chapel.

1895

Horwich Urban District Council formed.

1895

Holy Family School opened.

   1895 

Unitarian Church opened in Church Street, Horwich.

  1896 

Foundation stone of Board School laid.

1898

Company of John Crankshaw registered.
