1900

Electric trams commenced to run between Horwich and Bolton.

 1900

Opening of New Wesleyan Chapel at Blackrod.

1901

Horwich Population 15 084.

 1902

St. Elizabeth’s iron mission church built.

1902

King Edward VII’s Coronation – Large processions in Horwich.

  1903 

Contract for the construction of Marklands Reservoir let.

1904

Liverpool Corporation bought Rivington Estate from W. H. Lever.

1907

 Textile and Bleachworks had a week’s holiday for the first time.

1911 

Horwich Population 16 285.

 1914-18

1230 served in the forces from Horwich.  50 decorated, 70 died.

1921

Horwich Population 15 621.

1924

The Council purchased Ridgmont Estate.

1928

An Atlas two seater aircraft crashed on Winter Hill.

1931

Horwich Population 15 680.

1932

Large fire at Vale Hall.

1933

Wallsuches Bleachworks closed.

1936

Horwich Library in Jones Street opened.

1941

Estimated Horwich Population 15 751.


 1942

An American Training Plane crashed on Winter Hill.  Five occupants injured.

1948

Removal of old tram track in Horwich.

1951

Horwich Population 15 549.


1958

Silver City Bristol 170 air crash on Winter Hill.  35 passengers and crew killed.

1961

Horwich Population 16 067.

1964

The last steam engine repair leaves Horwich Works (May 6th).

1965

R. A. P. Chipmunk crashed on Smithills Moor.

1965

Horwich Council acquires land for construction of Baths.

1966

Present Horwich Library at Brazley opened.

1968

A Cessna 172 crashed between Winter Hill and Rivington Pike.

1970

Horwich link road to M61 opened.

1972

Building of Leisure Centre commenced.


1975

Official opening of Horwich Leisure Centre by H. R. H. The Princess Anne.

1976

Horwich Mechanics Institute destroyed by fire on 6th October.

1978

Piper Tripacer crashed on  George’s Lane.  3 killed.

 1979

Horwich Little Theatre formed.
