Section 6
Year 3 / 4
The
tasks involving Year 3 / 4 children started off in a Science lesson.
The science topic was about Healthy Food and following a class
discussion, the children were asked to choose from a selection of different
foods listed. They were asked to
choose just one that they thought might
enjoy eating and another that they would not.
Children then took turns on the computer using “First Workshop” to
input their own data, every child was given an opportunity to use the computer.
The
collected data was then made into a table.
Each
child took turns on the computer again to print out a copy of the table. The children took away their table and were asked to find and
highlight their own record on the table. After
a short demonstration by the teacher showing the children how to produce graphs
of their table, children were then given the opportunity to create and print
their own graphs.
I.C.T.
Activity was ongoing throughout the lesson, children not on the computer were
completing other science tasks related to the lesson.
The
information gathered by the children from the computer was then used to draw some conclusions.
“What
food do we like best?”
“Do
we eat healthy food in our class?”
Children were asked the following week to present there investigation in their Science books.
Year 4 /5
The
Year 4/5 class were asked to investigate a rather tongue-in-cheek activity
purely to capture the interest of the children and demonstrate to staff the process involved in Handling Information.
First
a group of children were selected to carry out the investigation, they were
asked to find out whether children that like “The Spice Girls” wear
white
socks. The children were amused by
this investigation, but it also made them very enthusiastic!
The
group made a list of questions to ask the other children. The class teacher
wrote them on the blackboard and gave out pieces of paper for the children to
answer their questions. They were
also told not to look at their socks until they had answered the first question.
Each
child then came to the computer in turn to input their data using “First
Workshop”
The group of children, supported by the teacher, then produced a table and graphs of the information.

The
children sorted the records into favourite groups.
They then searched the records for “Spice Girls” and looked at each
record to determine how many also contained white socks.
From this, the group of children were able to draw a conclusion.
