Case Study 2

The second case study involves testing out some new ideas with children in order to shift Handling Information away from maths based tasks and give children more opportunities in which to develop their I.C.T. capability.

The aim of this exercise is to use the case study to try to motivate staff and give them confidence to incorporate Handling Information into more of the school curriculum.

In order to make this case study as practical as possible I decided to focus on Key Stage 2 classes and make up interesting tasks based the on their current Science Topic.  Groups of children were chosen from each class and each group were given a task for them to investigate by themselves.  The class teachers were briefed on the tasks that the children were asked to complete.

Earlier, a short meeting with staff involved  gave full support to the activities.

Year 3 / 4              Do we eat healthy food in our class?

Year 4 / 5              Do people with white socks like “The Spice Girls?”

Year 5 / 6              Investigate the planets in our Solar System using a pre-

made CD ROM. Find the size of each planet and it’s distance from the sun.

Set up your own database of the planets and display graphs showing your results.

During the day the children worked in their own classrooms with help from classroom teachers.  My role was to float between classes to observe, work with the children and advise classroom teachers in the activities.
